OVER 18? Yep
CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Shell Overlord
βΆ CHARACTER
NAME: Raphtalia
CANON: The Rising of the Shield Hero
CANON POINT: post-s1
AGE: Mentally and physically 17; chronologically 10.
She is a physically mature Demi-Human, a race that ages based on an MMO-style concept of leveling. Canon narrative treats her as an adult because of her experiences.
BACKGROUND: Wikia, with a grain of salt. It quotes a lot of different sources and adaptations, and frankly, isn't very objective; I can write something up with more of an anime focus if you prefer.
PERSONALITY: Raphtalia lives her life on fast-forward, aging rapidly from traumatized child to bold adult, sure and confident in herself, her abilities, and her role in saving the world.
She is full of perseverance, being the first one out of everyone to suggest rebuilding her village after it's destroyed during the first Wave of Calamity. The reconstruction effort comes from her heart, and her parents' words to "smile, and help everyone you smile, too" and to "keep smiling in hard times." She swears at their grave that she won't cry anymore.
(TV Tropes likens her to a Stepford Smiler, but she really does it out of love and not with a negative connotation.)
Even in the face of torture at the hands of a particularly nasty slave owner, she smiles for the sake of her friends and villagers. This ultimately leads to PTSD that is more prominent when she is a child, but that she learns to work through and doesn't let define her as a person. She is likewise able to fight against a monster similar to the one that killed her parents, conquering her fear for the sake of protecting herself, Naofumi, and making sure they live in a world where nobody will ever be made into an orphan like her again.
This is because she faces her traumas head-on. Raphtalia is given the chance to confront and fight the man who took her and her friends as slaves, wrestles with, and ultimately conquers her desire for revenge. She is big-hearted and forgiving -- she does not kill her former owner, and even takes it poorly when he falls to his death accidentally.
Having been raised by a loving family in a close-knit village, she is used to the ties that bind; when given reason, she is absolutely devoted to others, especially Naofumi. Raptalia treats Filo as family, despite also regarding her as a rival for Naofumi's affection. She has a jealous streak that makes her occasionally pouty or petty, but it's never strong enough to get in the way of the bonds of family.
She tries to bring out the best in her party members and friends, whether it's taking care of them (insisting Naofumi buy better armor after he's injured) or something as simple as correcting Filo's table manners.
Raphtalia is clearly a very intelligent girl (and young woman). She and Naofumi learn to read together; she learns to cast and wield the magic she's most attuned to; she is able to level up very quickly as a result of taking well to combat training.
Despite her book-smarts and worldliness, there are a few matters she's naive about, specifically the nature of man and woman. It's unlikely she ever received the birds and the bees talk, so she's a little skittish when it comes to matters of romance, even though she's fully committed to her feelings of love.
Thanks to the royal family and the other Heroes, she is forcibly freed from her slave curse despite her protests that she doesn't mind it. Because Naofumi was the only person who treated her as a human after her capture, and who gave her the tools to succeed and grow as a person, she insists on having the crest replaced and the curse reactivated as a sign of her fealty. Her loyalty is absolute. "I am Master Naofumi's sword," she repeats frequently and with conviction.
It's not Stockholm Syndrome, but someone repaying the one they owe their life to. There are other implications mentioned later on in other canon sources for this, including that being given status as a free person would lower her status as a person; as a Demi-Human, she would actually be treated worse than a free human.
In summary, she has never been a child: from facing down slavers and torture to learning to fight for the sake of others, to growing more and more in love with the man who rescued her from her illnesses and insecurities, Raphtalia is in a constant state of growth, even to this day. She can be stubborn and strong-willed, but ultimately cares for everyone from the bottom of her heart.
POWERS/ABILITIES: She is level 87, able to fight on par with the legendary heroes summoned to the world from Earth. Her level cap has been broken once, indicating an even greater level of strength. She has light/illusion magic. She can fight with a sword, as well as that magic.
INVENTORY:
1. Magical iron sword
2. Mana sword (incorporeal blade)
3. Armor
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
